A good weather, poor fishing

Compared to the shonky weather on the last weekend, the weather improved lot this week, yet fishing was very ordinary. Lots of casting only with a little results. We saw some bait fish being chased around near the Canning Bridge, but a part from hooking up a couple of small fish, we got nothing to write about.

I met guys on Saturday on the river, and they told me that they have been catching big fish further down river. I might check there next week.

The last resitance of winter

Well, I was planning to go South to catch trout yesterday, but I didn't get to go at the end.

The guy who I was going to fish with told me on Thursday that he had to be back by lunch on Saturday, so we decided to call the whole thing off. It was disappointing to make a last minute change, but such is life, I guess.

So, instead of chasing trout, I went to fish for bream in the morning for an hour or so on Saturday. After that I went to see Chris at Flyworld to talk about how Japan was beaten completely by the All Blacks on Friday. I also got a couple of saltwater hooks and other stuff from the shop.

On the way back, I stopped at Mt Henry Bridge to meet with Mike and we fished there for a couple of hours. The wind was getting strong and chops on the water were looking like a size of a baby seal which made fishing difficult, but I was lucky enough to hook up with one fish.

It looks like flat heads are already making way upstream.

My contribution to the world's economy on Saturday.

I was waken up by a rumbling noise of thunder around 6:00 this morning. I asked my friend, Grant, to come to fish with me in the early morning when I saw him at the shop yesterday. So, I made a phone call to him to tell that we got extra hours of sleep this morning and we might fish later if the weather gets better.

Although the wind was still very strong and it would look ridiculous to cast fly line out there, it appeared that the rain clouds were gone, so we decided to go out to fish around 3:00PM.

By the time we got down to a river, Mike had already found an area which was protected by the howling gale. According to Mike, this was only area where he could be standing straight.

We fished an hour or so before the sky turned back to the angry mode again, and I got a couple of fish and a few more bites at the end. As Mike said, it was good to be out to fish in an extreme weather now and then.

It feels to me that this storm would be the last resistance of this winter before the arrival of spring.

Yes, Mike. Another storm is coming soon.

It looks like better to go home soon.

Bream can jump sometime

After catching a few palm size bream, I finally got connected to one fine fish at the end of the session today. The hit was quite gentle, but when I tightened my line, the fish bolted and jumped out of water about 2 ft. It took me a fraction of a second to realize it was bream.

Because it jumped towards me, I was forced to deal with a slack in the line quickly. Only thing I could do was to lean backwards while holding my short rod high in the air. To be honest, I was lucky I didn't fall backwards.

A good size bream does what we call "bream roll". The fish swims up to the surface and rolls towards you which can throw a hook away sometime. I think it is similar to a kind of a Judo throwing move. You pull and your opponent pushes you same time, and you are thrown onto the ground (or the other way around?).

Anyway, the fish I got today did that in the air. It jumped out, turned its body, and went back into water with a head first. It was a fantastic way to end the day.

This was a leaper.

Foot prints of dinosaurs roaming along the river

The tide has been very low for the past few days.

It is a pain in the neck to get a hook out of these things.

My yummy bream cake that I had for morning tea today.

Up & down Spring weather

The weather has been unstable for the past few days. The storm comes and goes, and fishing has been quite unpredictable like the tumbling spring weather.

The weather looked bit improving on Friday evening, so I went out to fish. Unfortunately it didn't take much for rain clouds to come back. I fished for a half hour or so, and it started raining again.

This was the only fish I got before the cold front came back on Friday.

I knew the weather was going to be lousy on Saturday, but my friend and I decided to go down river towards Claremont way as our source was telling that there were lots of fish down there last weekend.

We fished at there for about an hour, and yes, there were lots of fish. There were lots of wave too caused by a heavy weekend boat traffic down there, and I kind of had enough fishing in a washing machine after while. Beside, the rain and wind were becoming strong which started to discourage our fishing spirit as well.

The weather turned around 180 degree on Sunday. We fished around a local water, and it was nice to see a blue sky again and be on the water on such a lovely Spring afternoon.
