Summer fishing trip

I went South for a few days for an annual pre-Christmas fishing trip.

Fishing wasn't good, but it was nice to be on my packraft and explore a few places.

Fishing at bridge

I went out fishing on Friday evening with my friend.

We are hoping to catch some tailors, but they didn't show up.

We saw a few big black breams at the bridge, but they were too smart for us to catch.

Monday Public Holiday

Yesterday was a public holiday, and my friend and I went fishing to catch some whitings in the Peel Estuary.

We didn't see any whiting unfortunately, but I hooked a good size bream in a boat harbour. I was dropping a shrimp pattern from a jetty, and the fish came up to grab it as the fly was falling down to the bottom.

The angry bream was trying to go around the jetty pylons, and I thought I was going to loose it knowing the 4x tippet won't have any chance against those sharp barnacles clinging onto the jetty.

In the end, I managed to steer the fish away from pillars and rocks to bring it to my landing net. It was fun.

Winter is over, I think

Kick off my school holiday

I had a good start of a school holiday for having a nice weather yesterday.

Fishing was alright, catching 5 fish, and I also saw a a baby dolphin swimming side by side with a mother dolphin.

The weather turned up side down over night though, and it is very cold and miserable today.


今週末から２週間のスクールホリデーでの始まりです。

昨日の午後は、予報がハズレて、天気が良かったので 、釣りに行って来ました。ウェーディングしている横をイルカの群れが通る事、２回。一つの群れは、赤ちゃんイルカが一緒にいました。

日曜の今日は、天気は１８０度反転しての大荒れです。

As boring as the Japanese soccer team

Like the those wold cup matches that the Japanese national team played, fishing was slow.

After hours of fishing in a cold river, I only scored two fish. Although, one of fish was OK fish, and it pulled heard. So I guess it was more exciting than watching how the Japanese side played at least.

Scoring two points which was as much as what our highly paid, overly confident, yet still very incompetent Japanese soccer players got in this world cup tournament.

In my opinion, they played without passion, courage, and creativity. They were deserved to get knocked out from the tournament after the group stage, I think.


久々に釣りに行きましたが、サッカー日本代表の試合運びの様に全く退屈でした。

何時間も色々と動き回り、やっと２匹。こっちへ行っては駄目。あっちへ行っては駄目。まるで、ちょこまかボールを蹴るだけでの日本の横パスサッカーと同じです。

日本代表の試合、勝ちへの執念も感じられなければ、上手くいかない攻撃のパターンを変えるクリエティビティーも無し。ノロマでパスも繋げられないお山の大将をベンチに下げる勇気も無し。グループステージで敗退は、残念ながら妥当な結果でしょう。

Reparing my packraft

My packraft got a small hole on its side, and it was holding air anymore. So,  I did a repair job on Thursday before I was taking it out on the weekend.

I followed Alpacka raft's repair tip by putting a dab of Aquaseal. I pumped up the raft, and I was grad it was good to go again. 

My friend and I went out to fish on Saturday, but unfortunately the wind was blowing bit too hard, so I left the raft at home.  

I will bring out the raft next weekend as I am thinking to fish on the Moore River.

岩に当たって小さな穴が空いてしまったパックラフトを修理しました。アルパカラフトに問い合わせところ、ウェーダーの修理と同じ様に、アクアシールを塗るだけで大丈夫との事でした。

アドバイスに従い、接着剤をちょこっと塗って修理完了。来週末に釣りに行く前にラフトを膨らませてみましたが、問題は無さそうです。

My long weekend

We had a long public holiday weekend last week.

I went fishing for bream on Saturday, but I didn't get much result. So, I quit fishing early and went to Fremantle to take some photos instread.

My friend and I then went fishing again on Sunday, but we didn get much again.

I had given up on fishing by then, so I stayed at home on Monday to do some work for our photography class.

Big rock, big fish, and big shark

My friend and I went to Albany to chase some kahwai yesterday.

We checked a few places without success, but we finally found a big school at a place called Salmon Hole.

The school of fish we saw was bigger than 25m swimming pool, and we could see people went frantic on a big rock as the school was coming into their casting range. People were casting whatever they could and pulling out some big fish.

The only problem for us wast that we didn't have skill to cast a nearly whole fly line among those fishing crowds or have guts to stand on that the edge of the slippery looking rock where big waves were hitting from time to time.

We also spotted a large shark in the bay which gave us another reason not go to the rock.  It was a fair size, over 2m long, I would say. We didn't know if the shark was there for a school of fish, or just waiting until an idiot or two would fall from the rock.  Interestingly, we saw a group of body boarders who were unknowingly moving into the surf shortly after we lost a sight of the shark.

週末にAlbanyという町へ釣りに行って来ました。釣果は、ゼロ。ただ、サーモン・ホールという場所は、色々な意味で面白い場所でした。

高台から見ていると、２５メートルプールが一杯になるであろうサイズの魚の群れがやって来て、魚がやって来ると、それまでおとなしくしていた釣り人たちが岩の上で右往左往しはじめ、ルアーやらなんやらを群れめがけて投げます。そうこうすると次から次へと大きな魚が岩の上に引きづりあげられます。中には途中でバレて、岩を転がって落ちていく魚をいました。

湾の中では、アシカが魚を追いかけまわしていて、近くには、２メートル位のサメが魚を追っているのか、はたまた岩から転げ落ちて来る釣り人を待っているのか、湾の中をグルグルと泳ぐのが見えました。

僕らには、落ちたらサヨウナラであろう岩のエッジに立って、お祭り騒ぎの釣り人の中をフルラインキャストできるだけの腕も度胸もないので、高見の見物でしたが、それはそれで楽しめました。

大きな波が無ければパックラフトで出陣もあったのですが、でも、やっぱりサメがねえ・・・。ちなみに、サメが見えなくなってから２０分くらいすると、４人ぐらいのボディボーダーが湾の中に入ってきました。知らぬが仏とはこの事だと思いました。

Swinging session

I woke up early and I went out to fish the first hour of the rising tide yesterday.

As I predicted fish were feeding into the current as the tide was coming in.  I cast out and let the line straighten, and fish were hitting my fly as it was swimming across the current.

I really like to catch black bream on the swing.  It is bit like a classic wet fly fishing for trout on the big river. 

It is about reading current and bottom structure. I think it is far more sophisticated than chuck & chance fishing which many people associate it with bream fishing.

Fishing trip to Walpole

I went down to Walpole with my friends to kick off the summer holiday. 

We arrived at the camp site late afternoon, and after checking into our 5 star accommodation (the flattest piece of land on the camp ground I mean), we went fishing to get some dinner. 

We got some breams but they weren't big enough for a dinner plate, so we kept a few herrings which came through the channel chasing some bait fish.

毎年恒例のクリスマスホリデー前の釣り旅行に行って来ました。 南へ５時間ドライブして、やっとキャンプ場に到着。地面が一番平でウォーターフロントの一等地にテントを張ると、晩のおかずを捕まえに行きました。

We fished around Walpole next day.  We looked around a couple of flats but fish weren't there.  So, we gave up fishing on flats and fished around drop offs instead.  Again, fish that we caught were small schooling size breams.

次の日は、Walpole周辺を釣りましたが、魚は、フラットに入っていなくて、少々期待はずれ。という事でフラットでの釣りは早々にあきらめて、落ち込みなどの深場を釣りましたが、釣れて来るのは、キープサイズに満たないチビクロダイばっかり。

Fishing was slow in Walpole, so we went off to Albany on the third day to check Kalgan and King river down there.

We got to the spot where Mike caught some fish a couple of months ago, but the place was rather quiet. So, I jumped on my packraft to check the opposite side of the river where I saw many small breams on a flat.

I cast at them but they were only following my fly without hitting it.  I eventually caught a OK size fish along the drop off.

三日目は、釣果がパッとしないWalpoleではなく、さらに車で２時間行った先のアルバニーに行く事に。友達が２ヶ月前に釣った時には良かったという川の河口のポイントを釣りましたが、魚の反応はゼロ。パックラフトで対岸まで漕いで行くと、フラットに魚が入っている場所を発見。ここでやっとまあまあのサイズの魚が一匹釣れました。

After having lunch on the river bank, we packed up and left Albany.  On the way back to Walpole, we stopped at a few places along the scenic route.

２時間の帰路を考えて、アルバニーからはお昼過ぎに退散。 途中おもしろそうな場所を数カ所寄り道しながら帰りました。

On the last day, we decided to paddle a section of the Frankland River.  I set up the packraft while other guys were sorting out their kayaks at the canoe hire.  We paddled out eventually, but we noticed that the wind was getting stronger.

I guess, we were on the river for an hour or so, but after battling with the gusty head wind and having lack of fishing action, we were ready to go back to the dry land by then.

Mike and I were coming back to Perth while another friend was going south to continue his surfing trip. So, we decided to have our last lunch together before our departure. While we were having lunch at a cafe, the dark clouds came through and rain started falling. I thought it was a good timing to leave the place.

最終日は、Frankland Riveをカヤックから釣ろうという事になりました。パックラフトを膨らまして出発の準備が終わる頃に、友達二人は、、川の前のホテルでレンタル・カヤックを借りてきました。

大物が釣れる期待を胸に漕ぎ出しましたが、風が段々強くなって、空模様も怪しくなりました。川には一時間程浮いていましたが、前からの強風と釣果の無さに全員ギプアップ。「町でお昼でも食べて、さっさと帰ろう」という事になりました。

今回の旅行は、魚の数はそこそこ釣れましたが、サイズ的には去年と同じで今一つ。旅の途中で行ったアルバニーの川が面白さそうだったので、来年は、そっちにしようかなあ、と思います。
