Fishing in Tasmania Part 2

After leaving Launceston, we came back to Hobart to spend a few more days, and I was able to check some rivers north and south west of Hobart.

Here are some photos, and bit more thoughts on fishing in Tasmania.

ロンセストン周辺で釣った後で、再びスタート地点のホバートに戻り、数日滞在。前回は、ロンセストン周辺の川の写真を載せましたが、今回は、ホバートをベースに釣りをした時の写真をアップロードしました。

While I was fishing on rivers in the area, I saw some mayfly spinners flying around. Black ones were about #16-#18 and reddish brown ones were about #20.

I didn't see any big spinner fall like ones I saw in NZ last year. Just a few spinners hovering over the water, but fish were still rising here and there, and small mayfly patterns were working well.

タスマニアの北部の川では、あまり見かけませんでしたが、タスマニアの南の川では小さいなカゲロウのスピナーだ飛んでいました。話によると、北の方の川の方がメイフライのハッチが多いそうなのですが、ハッチは、シーズン初期がメインだそうです。

１６番から１８番位の黒いスピナーと２０番位の赤いスピナーでしたが、去年行ったNZのマタウラリバーのスピナーフォールの様に大量に空からスピナーが降ってくるのではなく、パラパラ程度のフォールでした。ライズの方も、ちょこちょこある程度でした。フライに関しては、小さいダンに出て来くるので、わざわざ認識性の悪いスピナーのスペントパターンを使わなくてもいいみたいです。

I found fish in Tasmania were much more cautious with anything drifting suspiciously compared to fish in NZ. I have seen a number of trout in NZ which turn around and start chasing a fly getting dragged with current. In Tasmania, fish were not coming up to a fly, if the drift was sloppy, and one crappy drift was enough to stop fish rising, and that was it. I didn't see the fish again.

They didn't move much to intercept either, so the fly had to be drifting naturally above their head, only then, they came up to take my fly.

The another thing I noticed was that the fish didn't like a big fly passing over them. On several occasions, I put fish down by casting bigger flies, like a size #8 grasshopper at them.

It appeared to me that fish were much more confident or felling safe with smaller pattern say #16 to #20 even though there were some juicy looking grasshopper jumping around while I was walking on the bank.

NZの魚は、ドラグに対して甘く、下手をするとドラグが掛かって下流に引っぱられて行く毛鉤をそのまま追いかけて食べに来るぐらいです。それに比べると、タスマニアの魚は、ドラグには、ずっとシビアで、下手なドリフト一発でライズしている魚を沈めてしまって、それっきりというケースが数回ありました。

それと、フィーディングレーンが比較的狭くて、それこそ頭の上を通さないと出て来ませんでした。NZの魚みたいに、１メートルも右に落としてしまった毛鉤に反応する事は無かったです。

それから、極端に大きなフライを流すと、ライズが止んでしまった事が何度かありました。その後、小さいフライに変えても毛鉤に出て来きません。川辺を歩いている時に、飛んで逃げて行くバッタが沢山いたので、バッタのフライを使ってみたのですが、全く駄目でした。

フィッシング・プレッシャーによる物なのか、時期的な物なのかは分かりませんが、釣りは、タスマニアの方が、NZより、ずっと難しい印象を受けました。

Because the size of the river being small, and there were some bush covering the water here and there , a shorter rod with 3 or 4 weight line will be a better option on Tasmanian rivers. I thought my bamboo rods fit perfectly down there.

I would still stick with a longer leader and tippet though, as long as it can be manageable. A long leader can be a pain in neck to use on a smaller water with lots of over hanging trees, but it will get me a better drift which will catch more fish, I guess.

川の釣りだけで言えば、釣りの感じは、日本の渓流と似ているので、竿も３番や４番で良いと思います。それから、川幅が狭く、木の枝が張り出している場所が多かった印象なので、短い竿の方が良いと思います。それこそタスマニアの川は、バンブーロッドが似合うと思いました。

リーダーやティペットは、日本で使っているものと同じで良いかと思います。フライのパターンは、ユーカリの葉っぱを食べる緑色のビートルなど、オーストラリア特有の虫のパターンが必要な場合があるのですが、今回は、＃１４から＃２０のカゲロウとトビケラとハアリのパターン数個で事足りました。

Many rivers that I saw in Tasmania had tea-coloured water (tannin stained, I presume), and it was very very hard to sight fish. You don't need to be a genius to imagine what brown trout would look like in a dark brown water. It is like finding an old brown coke bottle in a swimming pool filled with coca cola.

On many occasions, by the time I saw fish, I was getting too close. So, In stead of trying to look for fish, it was much better to read water and drift a fly over likely lies before stepping in too close. If my guess was right, and a fly was drifting well, fish were coming up to take my fly out of nowhere.

Speaking of the dark coloured water, some of those tannin stained rivers were not easy places to wader. It was hard to see what was in the water or how deep water was sometime, so, it will be best to work slowly. You will not only catch more fish that way, but also it will be more likely for your precious rod to survive the trip.

今回釣ったタスマニアの川の殆どが紅茶の様な茶色に染まった川でした。これは、植物からでるタンニンという成分が理由だそうです。この茶色の水の中で、ブラウントラウトを見つけるのは、至難の技です。

水が濁っているのわけではないので、魚に近づけばそれなりに発見する事が可能ですが、こっちからは見えなくても、魚からはよく見えるらしく、多くの場合は、魚に先に気付かれて逃げられてしまいました。むしろ、サイトフィッシングにこだわらず、魚が居そうな場所に毛鉤を流しながら釣り上がった方が良かったです。

この紅茶ともウーロン茶とも言える様な川ですが、ウェーディングは正直大変でした。流れがある所はただでさえ、底がよく見えないのに、水が茶色で石や岩も茶色だとなおさら見えません。場所によっては深いのか浅いのかも分からなかったです。ディーディモ対策として、今は、鱒釣りにはフェルトソールの靴を履いていませんが、その場合は、金属のスタッドは必須です。

We had beautiful autumn weather while we were in Hobart. Some rivers had trees which were in their autumn colour and it was a lovely time to be on a river. Adding to that, although I saw other people fishing around Launceston, I was only one on the water when I was fishing around Hobart which was great.

After having this trip, I got some ideas where to fish or not to fish, and it is great that I was able to find some rivers that I would like to go back to spend more time.

I also left something behind like catching a big bream or fishing on places like western lakes which give me a reason to go back to Tasmania in future.

４月のタスマニアは、ちょうど秋で、特にホバートの周辺は、景色が綺麗でした。川沿いには、ポプラなどが植えてある所があって、葉っぱが黄色くなって綺麗でした。それと、観光のピークは、とっくに過ぎていたみたいで、ホーバート周辺では、どこの川でも釣り人は僕一人でした。

今回は、家族旅行でしたが、次回は、キャンプをしながら周りたいと思います。
