Planing Form

I have just finished making my planing form.

I know that there is a still long process to get the first rod, but I am realy happy with the form being done because it took a long time to finish.

I have used an off-cut of steel bar which I found in a workshop. That workshop gave it to me for free, and allowed me to use their tools to drill holes and tap them.

60 degree groove is cut with triangular files.

I think the form came out very well.

A tolerance is between 0.01 mm to 0.02 mm too deep or too shallow at each 5 inch station. I don't think I can go closer than that with my skills.

The only catch is that the form is bit too short because the length of the off-cut I found. It looks like the max length of 2pc rods I can make is 7'4".

I don't worry too much about the length of my form at this stage though because the reason I decided to build cane rods is to build short rods for local streams anyway.

The form is finally finished, and at last I can start working with bamboo.

Yosuke:

I am about to begin my forms now as well.
How long did yours take to prepare (hours??) roughly?
What information did you use to make them I.e which books, websites, instructions etc??
They look beautifully made.

Hi Reuven

I am sorry not to respond to your comment untill now. I am new to blog, and I forgot about publishing your coment.

Anyway, to answer your question, I got information about making planning form from "Hand Cragting Bamboo Fly Rods" by Cattanach, and "The Lovely Reed" by Howell.

Thanks
