Looking back the season 2009-2010

The trout season 2009 - 2010 is ended today.

I actually didn't go trout fishing this season as much as I normally do. I felt that I needed to chase new targets on new waters to expand my fishing horizon, so I was spending more time on saltwater with new friends.

Having said that, it was still a good trout season at the end, for catching some fine fish and spending quality time with a friend before he's gone back to Japan.

Actually it was good to stay away from trout fishing for while because it not only gave me opportunities to fish wonderful water of Walpole and Moore River for the first time, but it also gave me a chance to bring back a spark into trout fishing.

Going back to trout water after spending time on salt flats was really refreshing. Casting into a tight spot and watching a beautiful trout coming up to my dry fly. Every thing, that I thought of being predictable, has become interesting all over again.

鱒釣りは明日から九月まで禁漁になります。

今年はWalpole遠征などソルトウォーターの釣りをする機会が多く、例年よりも鱒釣りに行く回数が少なかった。それでも友達と一緒に川へ行けたし、良い魚もそれなりに釣れたので、良いシーズンだったと思います。

鱒釣りからちょと離れていたおかけで、毛針の流し方や合わせなど、腕がちょっと鈍った所もありましたが、その代わりに気持ち的には充電期間があった事で釣り自体がとても新鮮に感じました。クロダイなどのソルトの魚も良いですが、やっぱり鱒程きれいな魚はいないと改めて思えました。

今年つれてくれたお魚さん、どうもありがとう。来年も良いシーズンでありますように。

Seasonal change?

Fishing was very slow around East Perth on the last weekend. The place has been most dependable for the past couple of months, so we were expecting to have another fine session. At the end, we didn't get much apart from a few really small bream and grunter.

I don't know that if we were fishing at a wrong tide at a wrong place, but I get a feeling that summer is finally over, and fish has made a move to other spots for winter.

今まで良かった場所から全く魚がいなくなる事はクロダイの釣りでは良くある事ですが、それにしてもEast Perthのポイントはこの２ヶ月間コンスタントに良く釣れました。行けば必ずクロダイが釣れる場所はパース近郊では非常に珍しいです。

そんなポイントでしたが、先週末は今までの魚影が嘘だったかの様にさっぱり。手のひらサイズの魚が２、３匹釣れるのみで、後はまったくアタリすら無かったです。

ただ単に潮目が悪かっただけかもしれませんが、季節が冬に近づくにつれて大分水も冷たくなって来ていますので（もうウェーダーを履かないと寒いです）、魚も冬に向けて違うポイントに移動し始めたのかもしれません。

Two breams

I caught a couple of small black bream and tarwhine in "the lab" yesterday.

It is a one of boat harbours where we test flies and observe fish behaviour. It is a good old day harbour which is opened to people for walking and fishing on jetties without having ugly fencing to block out people.

Black bream and tarwhine, also known as sea bream, are both good targets for fly fishing especially on light gears (#4 to #6 weight). They are easy to find but not necessarily easy to catch. They are found on flats and drop offs, around snags and bridge pylons, and on surfs (for sea breams), and all of these places are accessible from the shore.

Apparently these two breams are related in terms of scientific classification, however, they have very different characters from a fishing point of view.

昨日もまた仕事帰りに、クロダイの落とし込み（と言ってもフライフィッシングでですが）にいつものボートハーバーへ。

このボートハーバーは仲間内ではLab（研究所）と呼んでいます。泳いでいる魚もアタリも丸見えなのでフライのテストをするにはとっておきの場所です。ただそういう場所なんで魚もなかなかフライに出てくれません。それと釣れてくるのは経験値の低い小物ばっかりです。

昨日はめずらしくクロダイが２匹釣れました（それでも小物のみですが）。それから常連のへダイも２匹（こちらも２０cm位のチビ）。ところで、このクロダイとへダイ、分類学上では兄弟か親戚にあたるそうですが、性格はまったく正反対です。

This is a black bream

In my opinion, black bream are much more cautious and shy when it comes to hitting flies. Once they refuse or turned away from flies, they are less likely hit the same flies.

On the other hand, tarwhine are more aggressive and bold. They are happy to keep chasing the same flies over and over until they get hooked up. Also, tarwhine responds well when a fly get twitched whereas I have seen many black breams get spooked by twitching a fly in front of them.

For the size to size, black bream are much harder fighters than tarwhine. A decent size black bream gives you a good fight, and a big one even gets you onto the backing. Tarwhine is still not bad, but I find that they don't power and stamina of his quiet brother.

クロダイは神経質でフライを見切るのも上手です。一度見切ったフライを追う事は稀で、同じフライを目の前に落とすと無視するか逃げてしまいます。興味を示したフライにもゆっくりと近づいて行き、鼻先でストップする事も多いです。そんな時に急にフライを動かすと確実にスプークしてしまいます。

ヘダイの方は逆にアグレッシブで、同じフライを何度でも追い続け、その内にフックアップしてしまいます。動くフライにも良く反応するので、クロダイとは逆に鼻先でフライを動かすと効果的です。

フックアップした後のファイトは、面白い事に普段はおとなしいクロダイの方が格段に上です。ヘダイの引きは、悪くはないですが、普段その辺で釣れるサイズの魚ならリールを使うまでもありません。逆に良い型のクロダイはリールファイトになりますし、４０cmオーバーだとバッキングまで持って行かれる場合もあります。でも実際はそんなに走られる前に橋桁や倒木に巻かれて終わりですが。

The last chance

This is the last weekend of 2009-2010 trout season, so I went trout fishing for the last time before a coming winter.

It turned out be a nice autumn weather, and I was very happy to see such beautiful fish on such a fine day.

今週はシーズン最後の週末です。そこで、シズーンファイナルを飾るべく今日は鱒釣りへ。秋晴れの気持ちの良い日に、きれいな魚が見れたので満足の一日でした。

Afternoon on a harbour

Went to a boat harbour on Monday afternoon.

I could see many breams holding tight around jetty pylons ,but they were too cautious to hit my flies. Many fish came out to look at my flies, but turned around without taking my offerings.

I was unable to hook up those smart breams at the end, and I had to settle for a couple of tarwhine in stead.

月曜の仕事帰りにボートハーバーへ釣りに行きました。

普段のウェーディングからの釣りではなく、桟橋からの落とし込みの釣りでしたが、僕は、このスタイルでクロダイが釣れた試しが殆ど無いです。

桟橋の上からクロダイの魚影は多く見られるのですが、落ちて行くフライに反応はしても口はまったく使おうとしません。フライを見つけると寄って行ってそのまま数秒一緒に沈下、そしてフライを見切って去って行きます。

クロダイはまったく釣れませんでしたが、その代わりに小さなへダイが２匹釣れました。フローティングラインに１２フィート位のリーダー、その先に小さなミノー系のフライを使います。フライを底の方まで沈めて後はゆっくり表層まで引いてくれば、群れで競い合ってフライに食いつこうとするので釣るのは比較的簡単です。

Australian Salmon

We got fish called Australian Salmon here.

They got nothing to do with the true salmon family like trout, charr, and Atlantic or Pacific salmon. They are totally different fish. Although I must admit that they look bit like trout when they are small, big ones look nothing like salmon or trout.

When they are small (say up to around 40cm), they stay around estuaries, but they eventually head to the ocean and become pelagic. Apparently they make an annual migration from East of Albany (400 km South East of Perth) to the Perth off shore water in April in big schools.

オーストラリアにはAustralian Salmonとサーモンと名がつくだけで、鮭の仲間とは全く無縁の魚がいます。３０cmそこらの時は、日本の本流で釣れる銀化したヤマメやアマゴに見た目は似ていますが（と言っても体には蛍光イエローのスポットがあります）、大きいサイズの物は全くの別物です。

４０cmくらいまでは川の河口やサーフをうろうろしていますが、それより大きくなると海に出て行きます。話によると、基本的に寒い海で育つ魚で、毎年４月から５月に４００km南の海から集団でパース近郊の海まで上がって来て、そのままUターンをして帰っていくそうです。

They are big and tough, and you need something like 8 to 10 weight gears to land these things. Although schools do come close to the shore at a certain place and a certain time, they tend to stay off shore for the most of time, so people usually fish from a boat especially with fly gears as a casting distance with fly rods is relatively shorter.

On the last weekend, my friend Tony took me to salmon fishing for the first time. It was hard to get to the fishing spot as the water was bit on rough side. To be honest, after 90 min of a choppy ride and almost getting tipped over by a big wave, I was already missing land.

It took us some time to find fish, and fishing was very slow to start with. However they got switched on as the wind changed direction, and people started hooking up fish. After dropping three fish, I finally managed to land my first salmon, and I must say I have never thought that fish can fight that hard.

３０cmくらいの小型の魚は、河口でクロダイを狙っていると時々釣れ、またポッパーにも良く反応するので面白いのですが、大きくなって帰ってきた物は５−７kgまたはそれ以上になるので、＃８から＃１０くらいのヘビーサイズのタックルが必要になります。

友達によると、岩場など場所によっては岸からでもフライロッドで狙えるそうですが、普通は群れは沖を回遊していて岸からではまったく届かないのでボートからの釣りになるそうです。

I was using Tony's 10 weight, and even with that, I just couldn't lift the fish off the bottom. The fish came up mid water to take my fly, and then it dived down and just stayed there. I honestly thought that I got warped around a bottom rock or something as I was unable to move the fish.

Tony told me that my daily quota was ten, but I was done after landing the first fish (and it was only a small fish according to my friend). I hooked up a couple of more, and one of them was fighting even harder. The hook came off eventually, but in a way, I was glad it did.

Tony, thank you for giving me a chance to get my first australian salmon. It was just an eye opening experience.

先週末、友達のボートに乗せてもらい始めてAustralian Salmonを釣りに行きました。目的地はパース沖合に浮かぶロットネス島の沖合。ウネリがある中の片道９０分のロングライドで、正直ポイントに着いた時には既に陸が恋しくなっていました。

魚の群れを見つけるまでに結構時間がありましたが、昼過ぎから潮の流れと風向きが変わったせいなのか、急に連れ始めました。一匹を獲るまでにバラシたり、糸を切られたりしましたが、初めての一匹をランディング。

この魚、とにかく引きが強かったです。長い距離を走って逃げる事は無いのですが、フッキングしたら底へ潜って行って全く上がってこようとしませんでした。最後の最後まで力で勝負をしてくるので、一匹を獲るのに大変な筋力とエネルギーを使います。

使用したタックルは友達から借りた＃１０の竿にエーベルのリール。ラインは、シンクレートの高いシューティングヘッドに５フィート程のリーダーに２０ポンドのティペット。フライは＃１／０もしくは＃２／０のフックに沈下速度を稼ぐためにダンベルアイを付けたベイトフィッシュパターン。今回は深さ４、５メートルの所がポイントでしたが、場合によってはもっと浅いポイントにいたり、トップに出てくる事もあるみたいなので、その場合はインターミディエイトもしくはフローティングでも良いそうです。

Sky was blue

It was a lovely day to be on a river today. Sky was clear and the temperature went up to be around 30 degrees.

Since we came back from Japan, the weather has been wet and cloudy, and I must admit that it has been dampening my spirit. I guess I was suffering from bit of homesick after seeing my families in Japan.

So, it was a good feeling to see bright blue sky for change, and be on a river chasing some fish. We checked Canning River around Shelley but we didn't find any, and we then moved to Swan River where we hooked up some fish around snags and sunken rocks.


日本から帰ってからのこちらの天気は雨と曇りでどんよりしていて、なんとなく気分も下り坂でしたが、今日は夏に戻ったかの様な晴天。空は青く、気温は３０度まで上昇。

せっかくの釣り日和なんで、久々に友達と川へクロダイ釣りへ。まず家から５分のフラットを探ってみましたが、ボラがそこらで跳ねているだけで結果はボウズ。それから車をちょと走らせて倒木や岩がごろごろと転がっている場所へ移動。

先週までの雨で増水しているから、魚はバンク際のストラクチャーに着いていると読みましたが、これがまんまと的中でした。

Trip to Shuzenji Onsen

Shuzenji Onsen is located on the Izu peninsular which is about 2 hours drive from Tokyo. It is one of popular onsen (hot spring) towns in Izu, and a nearby river, Kanogawa holds Japanese native trout (amago), so it is an ideal place for people who want to do bit of fishing as well as spending time in a hot spring which Japanese people love to do.

We only stayed one night, so fishing time was very limited. On top of that the rain came down heavily when I got to the river, but fortunately I was able to catch fish at the end (I also missed one good fish).

As for our accommodation, we stayed at Kikuya Ryokan, a traditional Japanese style hotel, and we were impressed with their hospitality and meals as well as onsen (hot spring). We would like to use the same place if we go back again.

家族と一緒に修善寺温泉へ。

一泊二日の日程上、釣りの時間は限られていたし、川に立てば大粒の雨。それでもなんとか魚の顔を見る事ができました。

宿の菊屋旅館は、食べ物は美味しかったし、旅館の人は親切で、温泉も貸し切りの浴場があってとても良かったです。夕食に出た由比産桜えびのかき揚げはとにかく絶品でした。今回の日本旅行で沢山美味しいものを食べましたが、このかき揚げは一二を争う味でした。

それにしても、今回の旅行は釣りの日は雨か寒空、家族とショッピングの日は晴天でポカポカ陽気。どうやら日頃の行いを改めないといけない様です。
