Fishing in Rockingham

We went down to Rockingham today (about 40min drive from Perth) for prospecting some fishing spots for herring and skippy (silver trevally).

We stopped at Point Peron first to see if fish were hanging around the deep water off the rock. We saw a few fish there, and one came up to look at Mike's fly, but that was only action we had. We couldn't tell if the fish was skippy or not, but we could tell that fishing was going very slow and it was better to move to other spots.

The next stop was at the water next to the jetty connecting to the Garden Island Naval Base. We saw nothing alive in the water there apart from a clump of drifting sea weed. It was time to move again, we thought.

We then moved to Safety Bay after having a late lunch. We decided to fish at a small quiet bay behind a long sand bar. There was a lot of weed beds which looked to be a good place for herring.

Mike and Albert, walking along the bay

I kept casting a small crazy charlie without success, but my first fish finally came after switching charlie to a small shrimp pattern.

Mike then waded into next to me, and started casting a popper. It didn't take long for him to get the first strike. So I took off the shrimp and put my little deer hair popper. "Pop, Pop, Pop, Bang", another fish was on. It was interesting that fish weren't responding to streamers, but they they couldn't help themselves against poppers.

We failed to find skippies, today, but we had some fun at the end catching a few herring on poppers.

Fishy eyes

I believe, adding a set of eyes is very important for any bait fish patterns. No matter how strange or ugly it looks, a fly comes to life once eyes are putted on.

T
he weight of eyes also plays a big role on how the fly swims or sinks which is probably more important for fish like bream than how the fly actually looks like.

For tying small minnow patterns for black bream (on #6 to #10 hook), I use medium size bead chains for eyes. I feel that they have just a right amount of weight for a swimming action that I want to achieve.

With bead chains, the fly swims and hovers on the same plane without going up and down too much as it is being retrieved much like how small bait fish swim. Heavier eyes tend to make a fly move more vertically which looks unnatural some time.

As for colours, I use gold and silver. Some people like to use black, but I like to have a bit of flash with shiny eyes. Gold may be better in the clear water when fish are super spooky, but it will tarnish quickly for some reason. Silver stays shiny and I think it has more appeal to fish in the low light condition.

I got a couple of nice fish on Saturday on the Swan River, and you can see my small streamer with a set of twinkling eyes in its mouth.

the weight of 1 goal

I was watching Japan vs Cameroon game last night, and I must say that Japan did really well to hold their 1 goal lead till the end.
Their defensive tactics for the second half was not enjoyable to watch, and probably Cameroon was unlucky not to get an equalizer when the ball hit a cross bar. Having said that, I was still happy that Japan got their important 3 points.

I think a beauty of soccer (or football) lies in its difficulty to score a goal. We do see 5 - 0 game from time to time, but that is very rare in international competitions. The weight of 1 goal is big in soccer and that makes the game exciting and dramatic.

I guess, fly fishing for bream is similar to a soccer match. We can catch 5 or 6 fish in a session sometime, but that is exceptional. Getting one hook up is a usual thing on a day on rivers around here, and that makes this fishing challenging.

Lost fish

I lost two good fish on the weekend.

One was getting close to 40cm which I hooked up on Sunday. He put a very good fight, and as I was bringing him to the net, a hook came off, and he swam away.

Today, I hooked up another one. The fish hit a fly hard, and I felt his weight for a second or so, and my tippet got snapped (looked like I had a bad knot).

These are only two bream that I had a contact with for the past two days. One chance for a day, and it came without warning.

Looked like he was also looking for his fish.

My only consolation prize for this long weekend.

Seeing is believing

I hooked up a good size bream on my Friday night fishing session. The take was bit subtle, so I thought I got a small fish first, but the fish then started taking some line off the reel and it put a good fight. It wasn't a monster but it was still a fine fish in an excellent condition.

When it was laying in a landing net, I noticed that its right eye was missing. It looked like an old scar happened some time ago, but it looked like the fish has been doing OK so far. Anyway, I was just amazed that the fish was still able to strike such a small bait imitation in the dark even with one eye.

I used to believe that bream don't have a good eye sight. When I started chasing breams on flies, I was using small shrimp patterns which looked very real on my hand, but I wasn't getting many fish on these flies. Fish were more interested in big smelly soft plastics that my friend was using in stead. So, I thought that bream were either too blind to spot a fly in the water, or too stupid to appreciate my artistic creation.

Since then, I have spent many days on a river, trying different flies, and I now know that bream can easily spot a difference between what is real and what is fake. On top of that, fish might be interested in one pattern or a particular colour today, but chase something quite different next day. Smart and cunning fish, they are, and that is why fly fishing for black bream is interesting.

Hear are some other pictures from the last week.
